In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s a movement afoot. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. What is ALS you ask? From the ALS Association website:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
Pretty scare stuff to be sure. As for the challenge, the rules are pretty simple. Full details are here, but below is the gist.
- Get challenged
- Accept the challenge
2a. Pay $100
2b. Dump ice water on your head (and still donate) - Film / share
So without further adieu…
Take the challenge. Help the cause. You won’t be cold for long and you’ll feel great after.
